Labradoodle Rescue Information

What is Labradoodle Rescue?
This is the term used to describe the process of finding a good permanent home for a homeless labradoodle. Labradoodle Associations around the world make labradoodle rescue part of their mission, to help protect this wonderful breed.

How does a labradoodle become homeless?
Unfortunately, not all people who decide to buy a labradoodle puppy take the best care of their pet. Some dogs escape from their yards or homes; some are abandoned; some are dumped away from their new 'home'. Because of the huge popularity of the breed, many unscrupulous people are misrepresenting the breed as completely non-shedding and non-allergenic, in order to sell more puppies. When the new owners discover their dog does shed or a family member is allergic to the fur, they cannot keep it or don't want to.

Why is labradoodle rescue so important?
Responsible labradoodle breeders try very hard to match their puppies with responsible human carers. They get upset and angry when the people who have taken a labradoodle into their lives, neglect or mistreat the dogs that the breeder has responsibly produced. Responsible breeders think of their puppies as their babies and want to ensure that they will always have happy, caring homes. Rescue policies help to re-home labradoodles that have found themselves in these situations.

Other important reasons for labradoodle rescue include:

• Adopting a homeless labradoodle may save the dog's life.
• The dog is given a second chance of being a loved family pet and living a long and happy life.
• Quality labradoodle dogs are not unnecessarily destroyed.
• Some people prefer to get an older dog rather than a new puppy.

Most responsible, accredited labradoodle breeders will ask all new owners to return their dog to them if it becomes impossible to keep it. This way they help to prevent the dog being abandoned and have some control of where the dog goes in the future. If a labradoodle is surrendered to its breeder like this, a new home is usually quickly found.

How do you find a labradoodle rescue dog?
Local and international labradoodle associations are a great start if you are looking to provide a good home for a homeless labradoodle. These associations may also support IDOG – the International Doodle Owners Group - a non-profit organization devoted to re-homing labradoodles.

Many labradoodle breeders have dogs that require a new home from time to time, and so contacting breeders in your area is an option and they may refer to another breeder who has surrendered dogs. There may not always be a labradoodle rescue dog available when you first make enquiries, but you could ask to be contacted when one is available.

Will I be assessed as a suitable owner for a labradoodle rescue dog?
Labradoodle Associations will have different policies which are used to determine the suitability of a potential new home and owner. Having the dog's best interests at heart, they obviously want to avoid another negative situation for the dog; each labradoodle will be matched to the most suitable home. If you go to a responsible breeder for a rescued dog, you will be submitted to the same checks and questioning that they would give someone looking to buy a puppy.
